The Many Uses of Salt E-mail

Salt is one of natures wonder cure-alls, and has so many uses around the home other than as a flavour!
We have searched our books and put together a quick list to get you started.

 

Cooking with Salt.

Make cream whip more easily and egg whites whip faster and higher. Add a pinch of salt. Also add a dash of salt to egg whites for stiff, high peaks when making meringue or other baked treats

Keep potatoes from turning brown once they're sliced. Put them in mildly salted cold water.

Add a little salt to your boiling water when cooking eggs; salty water boils faster when cooking eggs, a cracked egg will stay in its shell,.and the shells will be easier to peel

Add raw potatoes to stews and soups that are too salty - the potatoes soak up the salt.

Clean your greens in salt water for easier removal of dirt.

Fruits put in mildly salted water after peeling will not discolor

Milk stays fresh longer when a little salt is added

A dash of salt improves the flavour of coffee and cocoa

Soak nuts in salt brine overnight and they will crack out of their shells whole. Just tap the end of the shell with a hammer to break it open easily.

Test the freshness of eggs in a cup of salt water; fresh eggs sink; bad ones float.


Cleaning with Salt.

Pick up a dropped egg. If an egg breaks on the kitchen floor, sprinkle salt on the mess and leave it there for 20 minutes. You'll be able to wipe it right up.

Clean up oven spills. If food boils over onto the oven floor, sprinkle salt on top to stop smoke and odor from forming. When the oven is cool, it'll be easy to brush away the spot.

Clean a glass coffee pot. Fill it with 1/4 cup of table salt and a dozen ice cubes. Swish the mixture around, let it sit for half an hour, fill it with cold water and rinse

Clean artificial flowers. Put them in a bag of salt and shake the bag. Take a look at the color of the salt and you'll see what you've accomplished.

Keep windows frost-free. Dip a sponge into salt water and rub it on windows, and they won't frost up. For the same effect on your car's windshield, put salt in a little bag made of cheesecloth, moisten it slightly and rub it on.

Clean coffee and tea stains from china cups. Rub them with salt.

Soak enamel pans in salt water overnight and boil salt water in them next day to remove burned-on stains.

Sprinkle salt in your oven before scrubbing clean.

Soaked discolored glass in a salt and vinegar solution to remove stains.

Clean greasy pans with a paper towel and salt.

To remove grease stains in clothing, mix one part salt to four parts alcohol.

Use a mixture of salt and lemon juice to clean piano keys.

If a pie bubbles over in your oven, put a handful of salt on top of the spilled juice. The mess won't smell and will bake into a dry, light crust which will wipe off easily when the oven has cooled.

Clean your iron by rubbing some salt on the damp cloth on the ironing surface.

Soak stained hankies in salt water before washing.

Clean brass, copper and pewter with paste made of salt and vinegar, thickened with flour


Health & beauty tips.

Soothe a bee sting. Wet the sting right away, then cover it with salt

Freshen your breath — Use salt as a mouthwash or gargle or add a little baking soda and use to brush teeth.


Around the home.

Eliminate a grease fire. Pour salt on top to smother it. (Never use water on a grease fire.)

Kill grass growing in cracks in the cement or between patio stones. Sprinkle salt on the grass and pour very hot water over it. Or sprinkle coarse salt on the grass, let stand all day or overnight, then pour hot tap water over it.

Hang clothes outside in the winter — If you add a little salt to your rinse cycle, your clothes won't freeze if hung outside on a cold day. In addition, a clothes line soaked in salt water doesn't freeze either.

Neutralise odours in pipes — Add salt to some boiling water and pour down the sink to eliminate pipe odours

Keep clothes bright — Add a half cup of salt to your wash water to prevent fading.

Shine silver — Shine tarnished silver by rubbing it with salt.

Remove mildew — A mixture of salt and lemon juice will help to remove mildew from tubs, showers and tile.

Kill weeds — Pour salt directly on weeds to kill them.

Use salt for killing weeds in your lawn.


Remove odors — If your hands smell like onion or garlic after prepping vegetables, rub them with a paste made from salt and lemon.

Freshen sponges by soaking them in salt water.

Eliminate excess suds with a sprinkle of salt.

To fill plaster holes in your walls, use equal parts of salt and starch, with just enough water to make a stiff putty.

Boil clothespins in salt water before using them and they will last longer.

Add a little salt to the water your cut flowers will stand in for a longer life.

Put a few grains of rice in your salt shaker for easier pouring.

Sprinkle salt on your shelves to keep ants away.
